A pledge had to be prepared, at a moment's notice, to propose marriage to any unsuspecting coed a Frater might suggest he impose himself upon. The time tested proposal below was committed to memory and was delivered by the pledge kneeling on one knee, holding his beloved's hand in his. Usually this took place in the cafeteria, or some other public place where maximum embarrassment was assured for both parties.
"Darling, for years I have worshipped you in silence,
but now my passion has risen to such great heights
that I must speak of my love for you.
Each night as I sit in my lonely room the thought of you
is all that keeps my poor heart from withering at its roots.
As the Great Bard once said,
"I am too bold, t'is not for me to speak to you.
You, the fairest star in all the Heavens, having wanton beauty
doth entreat mine eyes to twinkle in their spheres until they return.
Oh! to touch thy cheek, to be a glove upon thy hand."
Darling, I hope these words of entreaty will not go unheeded.
Marry me please!"
